Can a Twitch streamer go mainstream by turning professional and succeeding in one of the world’s most popular sports?

Popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat announced this week that he is quitting streaming and has entered an unknown draft to become a professional basketball player. At BetColorado.com, we developed exclusive hypothetical odds to see what the next move for Cenat will be, as his announcement is set to come Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

It remains to be seen if the league he plays in (if any) will be available for Colorado sports betting, where you can place legal wagers on Denver Nuggets championship odds for the 2024-25 NBA season.

Who is Kai Cenat?

How popular is Cenat? As of Sept. 26, he has 14.1 million followers and close to 100 million likes on his TikTok account at kai_cenat, 10.8 million Instagram followers (kaicenat) and more than 16.2 million subscribers combined on two YouTube channels, @KaiCenat and @KaiCenatLive.

Then there’s his bread and butter, Twitch, where his account has 13.4 million followers. He has won several awards for his streaming and has entertained famous guests such as Kevin Hart and Nicki Minaj.

But could he play pro basketball? The smart money at Colorado sportsbook apps, if they made such a prop wager available, would be against it.

On Sept. 23, Cenat posted a video in which he said he would quit streaming in his attempt to become a professional basketball player. He said he would be in a draft ā€œin a few daysā€ in some league, but he did not clarify where.

ā€œI’m becoming a professional basketball player,ā€ he said. ā€œSpread the news so nobody is confused.ā€ Cenat was quite animated in the video, shouting at one point, ā€œI’m not pranking y’all, bro.ā€

Cenat, who is all of 5 feet 4 according to reports, played in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game this year, but even there he did not draw rave reviews. There’s no evidence that he has played organized basketball on any level in at least the past few years. There is an element of comedy in many of his videos. To say the least, he’d be taking a very unconventional route to pro ball if he plays.

Clues To Kai Cenat Mystery

Then there’s this Kai Cenat video posted on the X (Twitter) account @KaiCenat.

Toward the end, a graphic in the video says: ā€œDraft date September 27. First game September 28.ā€ Sounds like the type of thing that’s only possible in an online league, no? That's why we have an online league as the heavy favorite in our odds.

Is Kai Cenat ā€œpranking y’allā€ after all? Stay tuned to find out. In the meantime, the Colorado sports betting promos available at BetColorado.com are very real.
