The Colorado sports betting market is entering a new phase following a recent change in state law affecting how operators handle promotional offers. While bettors can still expect to see bonuses and special offers, Colorado sportsbooks will no longer receive a tax deduction for providing free bets, a shift that could reshape the promotional landscape across the state.

Colorado Ends the Tax Deduction for Free Bets

As of July 1, 2026, licensed sportsbooks in Colorado can no longer deduct the value of promotional free bets from their taxable sports betting revenue. The change follows a gradual phase-out that reduced the deduction over the past year, culminating in its complete elimination. State lawmakers approved the measure as part of a broader effort to increase tax revenue generated by legal sports wagering.

The previous system allowed operators to deduct a portion of the promotional credits they awarded to customers. That policy was designed to help sportsbooks attract new users during the early years of the regulated market. As the industry matured and became more established, lawmakers determined that the tax incentive was no longer necessary.

The additional revenue generated by the policy change is expected to support important state initiatives, including water conservation and infrastructure projects. Rather than changing how betting works for customers, the new law focuses on how sportsbooks calculate their taxable revenue.

What the Change Means for Bettors and Sportsbooks

For customers, the elimination of the tax deduction does not mean free bets have disappeared. Sportsbooks remain free to offer welcome bonuses, bonus bets, odds boosts, profit boosts, and other promotions. However, because those offers no longer provide a tax advantage, operators may become more selective about the size and frequency of their promotions.

Many Colorado sports betting apps are expected to continue competing for customers through creative marketing campaigns instead of relying solely on large bonus offers. Existing users may notice a greater emphasis on loyalty programs, recurring promotions tied to major sporting events, and personalized rewards based on betting activity.

The competitive nature of Colorado's regulated market should continue to encourage operators to offer attractive deals despite the change. With numerous sportsbooks available to bettors, companies still have strong incentives to differentiate themselves through their customer experience, betting markets, live wagering features, and ongoing promotions.

For new bettors, comparing promotions will likely become even more important. Instead of focusing only on the largest welcome offer, players may benefit from evaluating factors such as odds, available sports, user experience, withdrawal speed, and long-term rewards. These features often provide greater value over time than a single introductory promotion.

Although the tax deduction has ended, Colorado remains one of the most competitive sports betting markets in the country. The new policy represents an adjustment to the business side of the industry rather than a fundamental change for customers. Bettors should still expect a wide variety of wagering options and promotional opportunities as sportsbooks adapt to the updated tax rules while continuing to compete for players throughout the state.
